So as we see 2016 come to an end and begin to embrace the idea of 2017, I thought it was about time to reflect on some of the crazy things that happened for Moebius Adventures over the last year.
First of all was the monumental success of Mazes & Perils with my new collaborator Vince Florio. We’ve had more than 500 folks grab a copy since we released the book in June. I just want to look at that in perspective for a minute. That accounts for nearly 1 out of every 5 downloads this year for us. It’s easily the most successful product in MA’s history and has launched us in directions I had no idea we would be headed, which is amazing to me.
Overall we had Moebius products downloaded nearly 2,900 times in 2016. That’s the second best year ever for us, so thank you to everyone who has downloaded a copy. We are excited for where we’re headed in 2017 to give you even more great content.
Second, when I restarted MA in 2007, I had no clue where I was going. I wanted to embrace the legacy of my partner Sean Bindel by releasing the game we wrote together. And though it was a complete mess, I’m still proud of what I accomplished back then. It was a heck of a learning experience.
When I rebooted again in 2013 with the first One Spot, I had smaller aspirations. Then, in 2016, we started actually releasing adventures for the first time and I rediscovered the fun I had in not only creating random bits and pieces, but connected stories.
2016 saw us release The Snake’s Heart, Serpents Below, and The Purple Lotus for Swords & Wizardry, and then get rolling with The Brigade and The Howling Mines of Khegek for Mazes & Perils. That’s 5 different adventures. Three from me. Two from Vince. And we’re just getting started.
It’s fantastic to think that we’re back to writing adventures, since that’s what’s in our name. I don’t even think it occurred to Sean & I to do such a thing when we started writing back in the mid 1990s, but I think he’d be proud of the progress we’ve made in such a short time.
Third, web traffic is rising again, which is awesome. My biggest year with MA was 2014 when we had 30,000 hits on the blog. Since we’ve shifted from the old blog site back to the main website (thanks Bill!), we’ve slowly been getting more traffic again. In 2016 we saw more than 12,000 hits and I’m hoping that number improves as we go forward. It’s tough getting noticed in such a busy space where everybody is competing for attention, but I hope that folks will see some of the posts that we’ve been putting up and find them interesting.
Fourth, we’ve been rebuilding a mailing list. This is something that I’ve fought against for a long time. No, I’m not sure why. But eventually it became clear that it would be good to have a list of fans of MA stuff that we could share announcements with on a regular basis. We’ve gone from a handful of people to more than 150 people in just a few months and I think we’ll see that number rise sharply over the next year.
And lastly, the future is very very bright. Somehow MA has managed to attract people to not only write cool things, but edit, make cool maps and art, and more. We had more adventures. More new classes. And even a Kickstarter.
The hope is that 2017 will be the best year ever for Moebius Adventures. And we want you along for the ride.
Thanks for bearing with me as I have continued the legacy started with Sean. Now let’s make some cool games together.
p.s. Next week we’re back to normal posts and regular updates!
