Zhilin Campaign Journal #6: Putting Some Pieces Together…

Today, even as this post goes live, I’m excited as the group tackles session #2 of the campaign. Yes, it’s barely begun — but I’m itching to get them deeper into the story and see what they discover. It has been a VERY long time since I’ve written a campaign a session at a time.

One Spot #0: Hand's Goods

But I’ll say this — the planning has revealed just how useful some of the older products we’ve done actually are at the game table. Let me take a step back however…

You may or may not know that when I restarted Moebius Adventures back in 2013, my very first product was One Spot #0: Hand’s Goods. It was intended to be a system-neutral, fantasy-themed-but-setting-generic location that could be injected into any fantasy campaign. And honestly I thought it was pretty awesome.

Mr. Hand, owner of Hand’s Goods, was only the first of these with his signature pawn shop. We then met the Painted Man, proprietor of a tavern with his name. Angar Bosz made an appearance in Angar’s Magic Shoppe. And lastly we met Dolothar, whose shrine to a Goddess of Healing and Mercy, offered hope to the hopeless or at least a warm meal.

Here’s the thing — not all of these will fit into every campaign. For instance, Angar’s Shoppe won’t appear in the Zhilin campaign. It just doesn’t fit into the world well. However, Hand, Painted Man, and Dolothar certainly will.

insta-npc-4-coverI’m not saying that they’re going into the mix without some subtle tweaks, but they’ll fit in nicely to help flesh out the East Quarter and the West Quarter. Hand & Dolothar will nicely slide into the East. And I think our colorful bartender will work in the West.

But we won’t stop there. I also have some bad guys to come up with. The Goons and the Orange Hand have already been brought up and I’ll need some bodies to fill in those roles as NPCs.

Thankfully I have Insta-NPCs #3: Scum and Villainy, Inc., Insta-NPCs #4: Henchmen and Minions, Insta-NPCs #6: Shh… Artists at Work…, and Insta-NPCs #10: Caveat Emptor. These will help me populate the criminal element ‘Neath the city-state of Zhilin, as well as a few artist & merchant types in the West Quarter.

For instance, the party will be meeting a Goon soon (Insta-NPCs #4)…

  • Type: Blocky (Bodyguard/Muscle)
  • Feature: Weapon (Spiked club)
  • Motivation: Family Ties
  • Gender: Undetermined (leaning towards male though)

lpc-fantasy-names-i-coverIf I combine that with the LPC Fantasy Names I Random Generator right here at our website, I get some interesting names to choose from (not all useful, but a few)…

  • Vezan
  • Nock
  • Cedez
  • Tadar
  • Kork

With just a few PDFs in my arsenal, I have some helpful pre-created spaces I can drop into my campaign, but some creative ways to help me come up with more interesting NPCs as well.

And I may be able to even use Little Spaces: Horrid Hallways to help inspire some interesting encounters in the sewers, but I suspect I’ll end up creating some new tables to help with that…

Long story short, I’m excited to put all of these fun tools into use at my table. Each one increases the creativity factor and reduces the stress. What more could I want?

Later this week I’ll let you know how the second session went!
