The following are some common examples of play.

Melee Combat

Character: Fighting Man, 1st level, Str 13 (+1 to hit), Dex 13 (+1 missile attack modifier), HP 5 (1 HD), Short Sword, Leather Armor (AC 6)

Combatant: Goblin, HP 3 (1 HD), AC 6, Spear

Neither combatant has ranged weapons, so they go right into melee combat. The Goblin doesn’t have a Dex store specified, so the GM rolls 3d6, get s 10. Character has a higher Dex, so he goes first in the turn order.

  1. Character attacks. Rolls d20, gets a 20, plus his +1 modifier. 21. He needs a 13 or better to hit an AC 6 opponent. Rolls d6 for damage. Gets a 2. The Goblin is down 2 HP to 1.
  2. Goblin attacks. Rolls d20, gets a 3. Needs a 13 or better to hit the character. Misses.
  3. Character attacks. Rolls d20, gets a 5 + 1 = 6. Needs a 13 or better. Misses.
  4. Goblin attacks. Rolls d20, gets a 13. Needs a 13 or better, so it’s a hit. Rolls d6 for damage, gets a 1. Character takes 1 point of damage, down to 4.
  5. Character attacks. Rolls d20, gets a 15. Needs a 13 or better, so it’s a hit. Rolls a d6 for damage, gets a 2 – Goblin goes down.

Ranged Combat

Character: Fighting Man, 1st level, Str 13 (+1 to hit), Dex 13 (+1 missile attack modifier), HP 5 (1 HD), Short Bow, 12 arrows, Short Sword, Leather Armor (AC 6)

Combatant: Goblin, HP 3 (1 HD), AC 6, Spear, Move 60’/turn

The combatants start at a distance of 100’ from one another. Since the character has a ranged weapon, he goes first. Same would hold true if he was a spellcaster.

  1. Character attacks with bow. Rolls d20, gets 13 + 1 from the missile attack modifier for 14. He needs a 13 or better to hit the AC 6 opponent, so it’s a hit. He rolls d6 for damage and gets a 1.
  2. Goblin closes 60’.
  3. Character can move up to 320’ feet in a turn or half that and attack. In this case, he’s going to stay put and fire another arrow.
  4. Character attacks with the bow again. Rolls d20, gets a 14 + 1 = 15. It’s a hit. Rolls d6 for damage, gets a 3. Goblin goes down.

The same general approach would work for spell-based combat as well. Ranged and spell combat goes first each round and melee goes after in order of highest Dexterity to lowest.
