Ten Wintry Tells to Start a Story

As we’ve crossed the Winter Solstice and I keep waiting for winter to begin in earnest here in beautiful Colorado, I’ve been pondering ways to work winter into any number of stories…

  1. Footprints from a polar bear in the snow at Svalbard, NorwayBooted tracks in the deep snow leading off into the unknown…
  2. Strange snowy animal prints leading inside…
  3. A storm wind blows a note against the window…
  4. From outside a scream echoes down a mountain valley and is followed by the howls of wolves…
  5. The party stumbles across a frozen body along their path…
  6. An abandoned cave offers shelter from a deadly blizzard…
  7. The party finds a snow-covered graveyard whose occupants have risen…
  8. A blizzard prevents any from leaving and the villagers discover the victim of a vicious animal attack…
  9. Howling winds at high altitudes force wild mountain inhabitants lower to find food…
  10. A village home appears to be flash-frozen, killing everyone inside…

Thanks go to my friend Mike (writer of The Forged Front at Game Knight Reviews) for helping with a few devious ideas!

May your hearth be warm, your bellies be full, and you find shelter against any storms my friends!

Happy holidays!
