As it began to dawn on us that we may have successfully removed Ballard’s spirit from the asylum, we began to ponder how we would remove the evil Dr. Curry from the premises as well. But we all knew that was not going to be an easy task. With the Tinkerer now among our number until this whole thing was over, we hoped we could find a way that avoided more bloodshed. Nobody wanted to see anyone else get hurt, let alone perish in the attempt.
Though we first experienced contact with Curry in the office on the main level, I think we all knew we were going to have to get to the 4th floor to really deal with him. So, with everything we could come up with (including two very crude hand-held EM pulse guns the Tinkerer managed to pull together) we went back in the next night. We had to figure out where his ghost was strongest. That would be the place we would have to trap him, if possible.
With the front door wide open, we could head right onto the main floor and march up the stairs back up to the floor where we encontered Nurse Drett nearly two weeks ago. We wanted to go beyond it however and went one floor further up. That was only possible via the servants stairs near the restrooms on this floor, so we carefully began up again…
As we headed up, we noted the beautiful carvings in the Newell posts along the way. Each round knob at the top of the post featured a shallow carving (no sharp edges) of an angel in a different pose. Some were flying upwards while others were blowing their horns. But it was the Tinkerer who found the other carvings as we carefully worked our way up…
On the post itself there was a different carving; words this time, each from a different bible quote.
- “Leviticus 20:9 If anyone curses his farther or mother, he must be put to death.”
- “1 Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men.”
- “Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… not by works.”
- “Matthew 10:34 Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”
Later that night when we discussed the meaning of the quotes, there were all sorts of theories… but the prevailing one seemed to be that the good Dr. Curry was telling his people and his patients to have faith in his methods and not to disobey or say words against him or they would be put to the sword.
Once we got to the 3rd floor, we began to hear almost a static from the top level echoing down the stairs ahead of us. It was a separate stairwell than the two we had already explored in the house. The one from the basement ends here and the big stairwell only connects the 1st and 2nd levels. But none of us were ready to start up those final stairs tonight.
Our Techie set up a digital recorder in the attic stairwell and we continued onto the floor. More beds. And a few tables, desks, and chairs. But nothing seemed ready to attack us here.
When we were done exploring and finding absolutely nothing to help our cause, we headed back to the stairs to go down. We would save the top floor for the next night.
Two things reinforced that decision for us rather dramatically.
First, the recorder we left behind had been systematically dismantled and a piece was on every single step heading upwards; a screw here, a panel there, all the way to the top.
Second, the door was open at the top of the stairs – just briefly. We saw a figure in a white lab coat glance down at us with the same smile we saw in the office on the main floor and then the door slammed with enough force that a couple of us fell to the floor. And the laughter echoed from above, chasing us all the way out of the building.
Every device we brought into the facility sent streaming data back to the systems in the van. So we were curious what that “static” might have been before the recorder stopped sending data.
At first, that’s all it was – white noise. But our Techie and the Tinkerer started pulling it apart and discovered that it was much more. Each of the different wave forms was a scream… and there were hundreds of them layered on top of one another. What had Dr. Curry been doing to those poor people?
Sorry about the delay over the last couple of days. Last week was a rough one for me and it took a bit to get back to a point where I could write. But we’ll see what the poor Crunchy Ghosties crew has in store for them as we rush towards the end of the 31 Days of Halloween challenge!
